The Beginning

The Story That Links It All

The Fuoco Memorial provides a unique opportunity for businesses, individuals, clubs and foundations to help special needs children to enjoy a summer recreational camp, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Due to significant financial and time pressures, most families can not afford to attend the Camp without private donations from events like the Fuoco Memorial.

The Fuoco Open began in 1959 as a Member Guest golf tournament at the Bellport Country Club. For the first 10 years, its founder, Louie. Fuoco Sr., invited only a group of family and close friends. The concept was simple…”play some competitive golf and have a lot of fun”. Along the way, the event raised some money, which was donated to Cooley’s anemia, a blood disorder affecting people of Mediterranean heritage.

In 1969, Louie’s son “Buddy” partnered with the Italian American Club of Brookhaven to sponsor the Tournament. At the time, Buddy served as Chairperson of Suffolk County’s Handicapped Advisory Board as his daughter Beth Ann was born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect in which a developing baby’s spinal cord fails to develop properly. Because of her physical challenges, Beth attended Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on Long Island every summer. At Buddy’s request, the club agreed to donate all proceeds to the camp.

In 1979, the tournament was renamed the “Fuoco Memorial” in tribute to its founder, Louie Fuoco Sr. In 2000, the tournament name expanded to “The Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival”, and the sponsorship was transferred to the Patchogue Rotary Club. Patchogue Rotary was and is a natural partner, as the Camp is owned by the Moriches Rotary Club and remains a favorite project of many Rotary Clubs on Long Island and New York City.

Today, the Feastival is run by the 3rd and 4th generation of Fuocos – Buddy’s son Steve, alongside his family. Since our inception the Fuoco Memorial has built a 13 Bed, state-of-the-art handicapped accessible Dormitory at the Camp, and has donated over $1,700,000 to help the kids of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck.
